The backstory to my song “Dawn Of A New Day”, now streaming on Spotify, is all about getting over a break up. Getting over divorce, actually. It’s true that time heals all wounds. That may sound trite. But it’s true. With that said, there are actions you can take right now to get you moving and keep you moving in the right direction.

In my experience, getting over a break up begins with one word that I had a lot of resistance towards. And that word is acceptance. I had to accept my new reality. If you wanna move on and get over a break up, then it’s time to eliminate the things that keep the attachment alive. I challenge you right now to do these things.
– At least in the earliest stages of a break up, I recommend NOT talking to your ex. It sucks for someone to decide they do not want to be with you. And if they won’t let you move on easily, that is really difficult as well. Keeping contact with them could keep a false sense of hope alive. At the very least, it keeps you from cutting the cord and creating a sacred space of healing for yourself. I blocked my ex’s phone number, email, and from all of my social media outlets. It was the best thing I could have done for myself at the time. I also recommend you remove any visual signs of them. Seeing traces of them around the house can make it really hard to move on. Start right now getting used to your new reality of being single. Make each little purge of their presence a sacred act of acceptance. And one more quick note about acceptance.

I had to realize that this person was not a blessing, but a lesson. A lesson for me to learn. I want you to consider that everything that happens to you has a purpose. Whatever your lesson is, it makes you an authority in something. Something that will make the quality of your life better, In general, it’s always easier to move your life from a place of resistance to acceptance when you consider that everything has a greater purpose for your life and that the universe is always working in YOUR favor! Always.

Another action you can take right now. Stay occupied! Now, some people will tell you to just distract yourself. But the truth is, distracting yourself too often means sleeping around and excessive drinking, both of which will make you more depressed than you already are. I am asking you to go invest in something that makes you feel proud. Something that makes you feel confident. A project that reminds you of your value and gives you a sense of accomplishment. For some of us, we already have a natural creative interest we can pour ourselves into, like songwriting, for me. But you don’t have to have a “thing” to start this now. Start small. It could mean just going to a class at the gym, because that is something that makes you feel proud.

Lastly, here’s a tip for getting over a break up that you won’t find anywhere else on youtube. An action that is 100% reliable. An action that puts a smile on your face and makes you feel good about life again. BE OF SERVICE TO OTHERS.

Did you know that there are so many volunteer jobs available in your area? Homeless shelters, animal shelters, teen mentorship programs, senior citizens visitations, veterans organizations, your local church…there is a way for you to give to just about anything you have a compassionate heart for. It is the one action guaranteed to take the attention off of your own pain and immediately into the experience of love. Right now, while your getting over a break up, why not take one day out of your week and volunteer your time. It’s not only a fun way to spend a few extra hours, it will build your self esteem and remind you that you have so much to give this world. So much love to share. And that who you are, right now, even in your pain, is more than enough to make a huge difference in someone else’s life. Good stuff!

These are some practical, reliable actions that you can take right now to help you more forward and get over a break up. You are more powerful than you know so if this heartbreak has got you saying “enough is enough”, get up and get active. Take one step today towards letting go and moving on, and I promise, the heart will follow.
